Here’s some things you shouldn’t forget to backup before you reformat your computer.

  • post-it notes on your desktop (these can be saved to file or post-its on igoogle)
  • browser saved passwords (Firefox lets you view them, so you can copy them down)
  • IP settings (write down everything in the TCP-IP properties to add back in later)
  • files on desktop (I keep these all backed up in a desktop sweep folder)
  • files in My Documents and anywhere else not on a network
  • Outlook pst file (to retain everything in your local folders – check your Outlook settings to see where the pst file is located)
  • Outlook contacts – export them
  • RSS feeds
  • chat conversations
  • software product keys
  • any personalised software settings
  • pictures
